Choosing where to stay near the Black Hawk and Central City casinos comes down to two very different experiences: high-rise casino hotels or a private mountain estate. While staying directly on the gaming floor keeps you steps from the tables, it also locks you into noisy hallways, crowded parking garages, generic room layouts, and overpriced resort dining.
For travelers searching for a vacation home near casinos in Colorado that balances gaming excitement with authentic mountain serenity, a luxury rental in neighboring Central City offers the best of both worlds.

Comparing a standard hotel room in Central City & Black Hawk to a luxury vacation rental (hint: this is our house and it's way more comfortable).
Yes, there are some nice hotels in Black Hawk and Central City, Colorado. The Monarch and Ameristar are the most well-known mega properties, and they are nice, normal hotel rooms (though prices climb quickly for the best rooms). On the more basic end you'll have the Grand Z or Century Casino Hotel in Central City, but while cheaper, remember—you get what you pay for.
Standard casino hotel rooms are often bland and generic—offering predictable, repetitive layouts that lack character or room to stretch out.
A private mountain rental in Central City, located just a scenic 5-minute drive down Gregory Street from Monarch Casino Resort and Ameristar, changes the entire dynamic of your trip:
Casino Hotels are designed to force you buy food in their own restaurants. We enjoy many of the restaurants in Central City & Black Hawk, but we've also noticed they're getting more expensive lately. A vacation home lets you cook the meals you want, with the healthy ingredients you prefer, and without the extreme costs that turn a cheap hotel room into a budget-busting weekend. If you don't wanna cook but don't want to pay the exhorbitant casino restaurant prices, there are plenty of places nearby that offer delicious take-out, too!
At the Peter MacFarlane Home, we have the biggest and most well-equipped kitchen in the area, including every cooking tool you could need an a huge collection of spices and cooking supplies, because you shouldn't need to buy the basics when you're just staying for a few nights.
We've stayed in the hotels in Central City & Black Hawk, and the staff is nice, but the level of hospitality has definitely waned since the pandemic. The fact is these properties need a lot of staff and struggle to recruit people, often recruiting from overseas much like a cruise ship does. At such a massive scale like the Monarch or Ameristar, our experience has been subpar, as they balance turning over so many rooms each day. At a vacation home, you have a single homeowner who wants you to have a magnificent stay.
At the Peter MacFarlane Home, hospitality is one of our core values. While we won't make your bed every day (though we could arrange this, if its really important to you), we are more than happy to customize your stay and we've ensured you have absolutely everything you need.
Casinos are not family friendly—kids are not allowed. Dogs are not allowed. And even though Colorado was the first state to legalize cannabis, it sucks to sneak out in the cold for a quick toke.
While on this one we'd love to promote other vacation rentals too, the reality is that only the Peter MacFarlane Home is designed for this level of openness and friendliness. We're the only vacation rental in the area that allows dogs, cannabis, and is designed for families — all under one roof. If you have a family and just want a little time at the tables or the slots, you should stay here, and come home to your fur-babies, non-gambling friends & family, and enjoy a relaxing evening in our luxurious, comfortable spaces.

Not everyone in your group or family wants to gamble. Staying in Central City gives non-gamblers, kids, and multi-generational groups direct access to rich outdoor and cultural experiences across Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties:
When planning a getaway in Colorado's mountains, Black Hawk and Central City's casinos are a fun option. But remember, there's so much more to do here than gamble. Our little towns are rich in culture, art, and history, and we're close to both summer activities like ATV, hiking, and biking trails, and winter activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. Don't lock yourself into just the casinos, gather your friends or family for a complete Colorado vacation.
Whether visiting for high-stakes tables, summer performing arts, or a cozy off-season alpine escape, choosing a private luxury home like The Peter MacFarlane Home delivers space, privacy, and freedom without sacrificing proximity to the action.
Vacation rentals in neighboring Central City offer far more space, privacy, and authentic mountain character than standard casino hotel rooms. While resorts like Monarch and Ameristar put you directly above the gaming floor, they also come with continuous casino noise, crowded elevators, and expensive dining. A private luxury home like The Peter MacFarlane Home provides multi-bedroom layouts, a fully equipped chef's kitchen, and a peaceful retreat just a scenic 5-minute drive from the casinos.
Yes, but you will need to look outside the casino resorts, which generally ban pets and restrict under-21 guests. Booking a private vacation home in neighboring Central City—such as The Peter MacFarlane Home—allows families and dogs to stay together in a luxury space just 5 minutes down Gregory Street from the gaming strip.
We're literally next door! Central City directly adjoins Black Hawk. Driving down historic Gregory Street takes about 5 minutes (roughly 1.5 miles) to reach major resorts like Monarch Casino Resort and Ameristar.
Most high-rise casino hotels strictly prohibit cannabis on their properties and enforce steep fines. However, the Peter MacFarlane Home is a vacation rental in Central City that welcomes adult-use cannabis, giving visitors a relaxed 420-friendly option near the casinos. We're the only vacation home that treats adults like adults and allows for this responsible consumption.
Vacation rentals offer multi-bedroom layouts for whole groups, fully equipped kitchens that eliminate forced resort dining costs, private multi-car parking lots, and quiet nights free of slot machine hum and elevator traffic.
Yes. You do not need to be an overnight hotel guest to enjoy top casino amenities. Monarch's rooftop Ara Spa, award-winning steakhouses, sportsbooks, and gaming floors are fully open to all visitors. You can enjoy resort luxury by day, then return to your private mountain home to unwind.
