Madam Lou Bunch Day: Held every June, this beloved local tradition honors a 19th-century brothel madam who became a mountain hero during a tuberculosis outbreak. Dressed in period Victorian attire, locals and visitors gather on Main Street for live music, costume contests, and the main event—the hilarious Bed Race, where teams sprint down the street pushing actual brass beds!
Stills in the Hills: Every June, historic downtown Central City transforms into a giant open-air speakeasy. Distilleries from across Colorado gather to serve tastings of craft whiskeys, moonshines, gins, and vodkas paired with food and live music.
The Great Central City Beer Festival: This August festival features craft brews from over twenty Colorado breweries, delicious street food, and live bands—all set against the backdrop of Victorian brick storefronts.

The Gilpin History Museum & Local Art Scene

Central City features 294 historic buildings that date back over a century. History buffs will love spending an afternoon at the Gilpin History Museum, packed with authentic pioneer artifacts, historic photographs, and even an early 1900s mountain submarine. Just around the corner in historic Washington Hall, the Gilpin County Arts Association showcases stunning original work from over a hundred regional artists.

The Gilpin History Museum is open daily during the summer, and by appointment from October through May. Their Main Street tours, mentioned above, are available year-round.

Gold Mines & Historic Mills in Central City & Idaho Springs

Start your gold rush adventure right in our backyard at the Hidee Gold Mine in Central City. Here, you can venture underground and actually chip your own real gold ore sample straight out of the vein! Afterwards, take a short, scenic drive down the canyon into Idaho Springs to explore the iconic Argo Gold Mill and Tunnel—where every tour includes a hands-on gold-panning lesson—or go deeper into mining history at the Phoenix Gold Mine. You can also book a tour at Colorado School of Mines' Edgar Experimental Mine (advanced reservations required). It is an unforgettable, interactive trip through time for guests of all ages.

Historic Black Hawk & The Bronze Sculpture Walk

While neighboring Black Hawk is famous today for its mega casinos, it is also steeped in historic lode gold strike history. It was home to most of the stamp mills that crushed mined ore into a fine dust for gold extraction—and it was Peter MacFarlane that built many of those mills. Enjoy a peaceful morning walking the Black Hawk Sculpture Tour, a self-guided route featuring stunning bronze statues celebrating local wildlife and mining pioneers. Because Black Hawk is less than a mile away, you can easily hop on the free shuttle to enjoy the town's art and history before heading out for dinner.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad & Victorian Clear Creek
