Stage 2 Fire Ban In Effect

Gilpin County is currently in a Stage 2 Fire Ban. Please read below for what this means for your stay.

House Rules & Requests

We're super-chill hosts, and we're not going to sweat the small stuff. Our house rules and requests are mostly for your safety, to help preserve our historical home, and to protect the mountains from fire.

🔑 Check-in & Check-Out

Check In Time is 3:00 PM.

Check-Out Time is 11:00 AM.

Early Check-In or Late Check-Out may be available as an add-on depending on availability.

Please ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked whenever you leave the house. We don't want a curious bear moving in after you.

Noise

There are neighbors next door. Please keep the noise down after 10 PM. We do not use those awful noise monitor things, but we don't want the Sherriff coming either.

🔥 Smoking and Fire Safety

County-Wide Fire Bans

Colorado mountain communities are very sensitive to fire risk. There may be county-wide fire bans that prohibit open flame fire pits and outdoor smoking. Be fire-wise and help protect our beautiful mountains and this historic home

Certain amenities or activities may be unavailable during elevated fire bans.

  • During a Stage 1 Fire Ban, open fires are prohibited but fire pits with a grate and our wood-fire grill are permitted. Smoking outdoors must be done in a barren area like our parking area. The gas grill is always allowed.
  • During a Stage 2 Fire Ban, the county prohibits any outdoor fire, including our woodfire grill. During these times, our storage bench with firewood will be locked or emptied. The county also bans outdoor smoking, even in our parking area. The gas grill is always allowed.

Candles & Fireworks (Including Sparklers)

Please, do not burn candles in the home. One klutzy move or errant dog's tail could create a big problem. Instead, we have supplied plenty of LED candles (including tapered candles and candelabras for the dining table) to create a romantic or relaxed mood.

Fireworks of any kind, including sparklers, are always prohibited at MacFarlane Home.

Tobacco & Cannabis

Smoking tobacco products is not allowed indoors. You can smoke outside but please be very careful about embers, especially when flicking or ashing your smokey treats. Use the provided smoker poles to dispose of your cigarette butts. Please note that during Fire Bans, Gilpin County bans smoking outdoors.

You can smoke cannabis indoors.

  • Please don't ash on the carpet.
  • Please use the provided Ozium to clean and freshen the air.
  • Be careful not to blow smoke near the smoke alarms. Those suckers are sensitive and LOUD, and believe us they will harsh your buzz really quick. Smoke alarms will alert on our phones, so if you do accidentally set them off, text us immediately so we don't needlessly call the fire department.

You can vape either product indoors.

Why the difference between tobacco and cannabis? The molecule size is different. Tobacco is very small and seeps into fabrics and walls, making it hard to clean and the smell never really goes away. Cannabis smoke molecules are a little larger, and much easier to clean. Once the smoke is gone and the house is cleaned, you can't tell.

🚗 Parking & EV Charger

Street parking in mountain towns can be a nightmare—but not here. We boast the largest private, on-property parking available in Central City. There is flat, ample space to easily park multiple vehicles. There's also space for a small or medium-sized ATV, OHV, or snowmobile trailer, making this the ultimate basecamp for backcountry adventurers. There is an additional public lot 500 feet up the road.

We reserve 1 space for the Blue House across the street, and we may occasionally need to get in an out of the garage. (Sorry, the garage is closed and locked.) Please let us know how many cars you plan to have and whether you plan to bring a trailer, so that we can plan where we park if we're staying at the Blue House.

If you drive an electric vehicle, feel free to use the EV Charger. There's no extra fee. It's for guest use only.

Toy Trailers

You can park a small or medium-sized toy trailer in our parking lot! The recommended maximum trailer length is 16 feet (ish). You really need to be able to reverse a trailer though. If you have a longer trailer, the public lot up the street has more space (but you need to be able to reverse there, too).

🐶 Dogs

We really love our furry four-legged friends, and we want them to have a great stay too. So we've provided a variety of amenities to help you as puppy parents to make your stay easy.

Only Dogs are Allowed

Sorry, we're allergic to cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs (weird, right?)—so we only allow dogs.  If you have an emotional support iguana, we can talk about that.

Accidents Happen

We've had puppies and elderly dogs, so we're all too familiar with the fact that dogs have accidents. If your dog (or child) soils the carpet or furniture, please use the small Bissell steam cleaner (stored in the laundry room) to clean it up, and let us know so we can deep clean the spot after you leave.

Anxious Pups

Some dogs get really anxious in new spaces or when their humans aren't home. To ensure they don't completely tear up the furniture when you're gone, we've provided a crate for them to nest in. If your dog goes wild and tears stuff up, we may need to charge a repair or replacement fee (though we try not to for most things).

Minimizing Fur

We love cuddling with dogs too, but if your fur-baby is a shedder or a scratcher, please have them lay on the provided doggy blanket (it has paws) rather than on the furniture directly. You can also use this as bedding for the crate. This helps us protect things and clean up for the next guest.

Playing Outside

The enclosed dog run area is the part of the yard where you entered the house. Please watch your dog rather than leave them free to roam—there are some gaps that eager small dogs could squeeze through, and big dogs could jump the fence. Please clean up doggie dookie with the provided bags. It's perfectly fine to play with your pup in the open yard or parking area, but be mindful of critters and cars that could taunt them into a chase.

🧹 Cleaning & Chores

We don't saddle you with a bunch of chores to do when you're leaving. We do ask that you respect the home, and not leave it a filthy mess or that could ruin this policy for everyone. We have provided a lot of cleaning supplies for spills and accidental messes, and most of them are in the laundry room or under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Really clean departures (like running the dishwasher) will be eligible for a discounted stay next time you visit!

We're not going to freak out over a messed up towel or a broken glass, or even a damaged piece of furniture. All we ask is that you tell us about things that break so we can fix or repair them. Accidental damage is easily forgiven, just let us know.

Now, if you lose your cool and tear through the house with a sledgehammer on a bender, excessively break furniture / plates / windows / doors / etc, or really trash the place, then we'll need to charge you for the repair or replacement of our stuff.

Only Flush Toilet Paper

Please only flush toilet paper. The house is old and the sewer line standards were not what they are today. No wipes, lady products, condoms, hair, paper towels, or anything else.  Each bathroom is supplied with sanitary disposal bags and trash cans—please use those for anything that's not toilet paper. Pretty Please.

🎉 Events, Parties, & Gatherings

Our large yard and home is great for family gatherings, small weddings, gender reveals (no fire!), birthday parties, retreats, meetings, and other small events. Any gatherings of people who are not sleeping at our home must be pre-approved and may incur a cleaning fee, because it's more work to clean up afterward.

🎥 Content Creators

Content creation is welcome here. No licensing, permission, or fees required. In fact, we'd really like to see what you create, whether it's our taste or not, because we love creativity. And we'd love a mention or a social media tag, too.

Live-streaming is limited to 1 device at a time, though. The Starlink connection is great but can only handle so much.

⚡️ Heads-Up About Power Outages

Colorado mountain communities occasionally experience power outages, but they're usually no more than a couple hours and Xcel notifies immediately. We'll do our best to keep you updated about restoration times. The door lock and smoke alarms will still work.

Because their power lines have been implicated in massive wildfires recently, Xcel occasionally plans "public safety outages" that can last multiple days. If they plan these during your stay, we'll notify you and will allow for full-refund cancellation if you choose.
